6-4-3. Some people would look at this sequence of numbers and wonder what they are all about. For Coach Tom Armstrong, he probably goes to bed each night thinking of the perfectly turned double play, in which the shortstop tosses the ball to the second baseman who fires the ball accurately and on time to the first baseman to secure yet another Screaming Eagle victory.

To say Coach Armstrong is a baseball junkie is correct. The guy lives and breathes baseball. It is his passion, and he has been the Head Baseball Coach for the former Park Falls School District and the current Chequamegon School District for 20 years now. His first season was in 2000, and he led the Cardinals to a State Runner-Up finish that season.

As rewarding of a first season as it was for Coach Armstrong and the team, it came with a heavy heart and big shoes to fill. Coach Armstrong’s father, Tom Sr., an icon in Park Falls and beyond, had recently passed away.  Tom Sr’s baseball resume for the former Park Falls School District was as impressive as anyone’s and earned Tom Sr. a place in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Now 20 years later, Coach Armstrong joins his late father with the honor of being selected into the Hall of Fame!

For anyone who follows Chequamegon baseball, we knew it was only a matter of time for the Hall of Fame to come calling Coach Armstrong’s name. His tenure as a coach has been and continues to be, a success. Coach Armstrong has earned 340 career wins, taken 3 teams to the state tournament, won 7 conference titles, won 13 regional championships which placed his teams at sectional competitions, 7 conference coach of the year honors, 2 district coach of the year honors, and was twice selected to coach the WBCA All-Star team. These accomplishments tell the story of a winning program that is consistent and performs at a high level.

But as much as we may say Coach Armstrong is a great baseball coach, which he is, he is an even better person. He genuinely cares for his players and takes an interest in their lives outside of baseball. To attain as much success as Coach Armstrong, it takes more than knowing the game of baseball. It takes knowing how to work with student-athletes and people. He is as much a Hall of Fame person as a Hall of Fame Coach.

The Chequamegon School District is proud of Coach Armstrong and recognizes we are fortunate to have him lead the charge every spring. While the players’ names change and a new roster make up the team, the one constant has been an Armstrong at the helm of the baseball program. This year marks the 47th consecutive year an Armstrong leads high school baseball in this community. We could say this is about a legacy and continuing what his father started. It is probably safe to say Coach Armstrong wouldn’t want it any other way.

Congratulations to Coach Tom Armstrong on his deserving selection to the Hall of Fame. On Chequamegon!!!
