It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) that every child has access all day, every day to a full time registered professional school nurse (hereinafter referred to as school nurse). The school nurse serves in a pivotal role that bridges health care and education. Grounded by standards of practice, services provided by the school nurse include leadership, community/public health, care coordination, and quality improvement (NASN, 2016a). Monitoring Your Health
I Need To Stay Home If...
I need to stay home if: 1) FEVER: I have a fever temperature of 100 or higher. 2) VOMITING: I am vomiting within the past 24 hours. 3) RUNNY NOSE: I have a runny nose with yellow/green discharge. 4) PERSISTENT COUGH: I have a persistent cough; a new cough not related to a previously diagnosed illness. 5) DIARRHEA: I have diarrhea within the past 24 hours. 6) RASH: I have a rash; Impetigo, ringworm, or body rash with Itching fever. 7) HEAD LICE: I have head lice; itchy head, active hood lice or nits. 8) EYE INFECTION: I have an eye infection; redness, itchy, and/or 'crusty" drainage, from eye(s). 9) COMMUNICABLE DISEASE: I have a communicable disease; flu, Measles, MRSA, etc.
I'm Ready To Return To School When I'm...
I'm ready to return to school when I'm: 1) FEVER: fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication i.e. Tylenol or Motrin. 2) VOMITING: Free from vomiting for at least 24 hours and have had at least 2 solid meals. 3) RUNNY NOSE: on required antibiotics for at least 24 hours. 4) PERSISTENT COUGH: cleared by my doctor and have a note specifying my continued symptoms are not contagious to others. 5) DIARRHEA: free from diarrhea for at least 24 hours. 6) RASH: free from rash, itching open sores and fever. And I have been evaluated by my doctor, if needed. 7) HEAD LICE: treated with appropriate lice treatment at home. 8) EYE INFECTION: evaluated by my doctor, have begun appropriate medication, and/or have a note from my doctor stating I may return to school. 9) COMMUNICABLE DISEASE: no longer contagious and the incubation period for any communicable disease has passed.
